Grief and Energy Self Care – Grounding – part 2 of 3

Last week, I gave you ideas about how to replenish your heart chakra. Today, I’m going to talk about another common way your energy system may be affected by grief, and how to care for yourself in this area.

You may find it difficult to remain fully grounded when you lose a partner, a parent, a pet, or another loved one. Being “grounded” is about being physically present in your body. It is also about having a connection to the Earth. From the perspective of energy healing, a person who has a connection to the Earth is “plugged in” to a bountiful energy source. When you are grounded, all of your chakras (energy centers) are “fed,” which contributes to physical energy and mental clarity. Being well grounded supports a healthy energy field surrounding the body, creating a buffer between your skin and the rest of the world.

How do you feel when you are not fully grounded? You may feel unstable and “spacey,” and have a hard time with your ability to focus and remember things. You might be unaware of your legs and feet—or have limited awareness of any of your body sensations.

You can improve your groundedness. How?

  1. Do an activity that increases awareness of your physical body, such as walking barefoot, doing martial arts, or stretching slowly.
  2. Continue meaningful rituals and traditions, such as making a particular holiday food associated with a loved one who has passed on.
  3. Eat root vegetables: potatoes, yams, carrots, rutabagas, etc.
  4. Put a rock in your pocket, reminding you of your connection to the Earth. Hematite and obsidian are two stones which carry the energy of grounding.

There will be one more post about grief and the self-care of your energy system this month.

  1. Thank you for the practical and easy to use suggestions for grounding. This came at the perfect time!

  2. This is a great post and, for someone like me who has a hard time staying grounded almost all the time, very timely. I’m always looking for ways to ground. I find gentle yoga, breathwork and heel drops (Qi Gong) are the most helpful. I also find eating grounds me but is not helpful in the big picture LOL.

  3. It never crossed my mind that if I’m not feeling my legs and feet or have limited awareness of my body sensations that I could be ungrounded. Thank you for the wonderful tips to get grounded in my body. Your post came at a good time. I find the holidays always brings a sense of grief for me that I haven’t been able to figure out what it’s about. I will be sure to use some grounding techniques to help me get through these next few weeks. Lovely post.

    • Suzanne, I really appreciate your specific feedback. Re your holiday grief, perhaps your sensitive soul is tuning into the losses others are feeling?

  4. Great suggestions Janet. I also find essential oils to be helpful for grounding. Vetiver or sandalwood can be useful. Diluted with a carrier oil they can be used to anoint the soles (or tops) of your feet or even used to massage your feet. Another grounding idea is to lean up against a big tree. I find that can be particular helpful in times of grief. The steady solid support is quite comforting.
